Descaling Electric Glass Kettle Using Kitchen Ingredients

October 2nd, 2023

Limescale often appears at the bottom of an electric glass kettle due to the use of hard water. The substance is harmful to the kettle so users should know how to descale it. This article suggests some ways to remove limescale using popular ingredients from our kitchen such as lemon, white vinegar or baking soda.

What is Limescale?

Limescale is a hard chalky substance that mainly consists of calcium carbonate, which is commonly found in rocks, seashells and eggshells. It is usually off-white, but sometimes its color could be gray, pink, or even reddish-brown.

A sample of limescale found at the bottom of an electric glass kettle.

The chalky buildup appears because of hard water, which contains a high amount of minerals such as magnesium carbonates and calcium. In the area where hard water is supplied, limescale can be found not only in kettles, but also anything else that comes in regular contact with water.

Why is descaling necessary?

Limescale buildup in electric glass kettles for a long time will affect the quality of the device and it could be harmful to human health:

- The heating part of the electric glass kettle becomes less effective, so it may take a longer time to boil water and therefore the device becomes less energy-efficient.

- Hot drinks, particularly tea, would have a weird flavor.

- Limescale broken into pieces could be found floating in our drink, which could accidentally be bitten or even swallowed.

So it is necessary to descale the electric glass kettle when the limescale becomes visible at the bottom of the device.

How to descale the kettle?

Limescale can be easily removed at home, using ingredients available in the kitchen such as white vinegar, lemon, or baking soda. They all give the same results, and the cleaning process is the same. Here are the cleaning steps:

  1. Fill the kettle with water and add ½ cup of vinegar or ½ cup of baking soda, or 2 lemons cutted in pieces.
  2. Let it soak for one hour.
  3. Boil the kettle (three times for lemon, once for vinegar or soda).
  4. Let it sit again for 20 minutes or longer, depending on how bad the limescale is, then rinse thoroughly several times to get rid of the smell.
  5. Boil the kettle again to ensure there is no aftertaste.
  6. Wipe the outside of the kettle with a moist towel and an antibacterial multi-purpose cleaner.

This is why you should put lemon slices in your tea kettle every now and then

Lemon cut into pieces is one of the ingredients used to descale an electric glass kettle.

Please remember not to submerge the bottom of the electric glass kettle in water while cleaning it, as there is a heating element at the kettle bottom.

How to prevent limescale buildup?

To reduce limescale buildup in the future, please make sure to empty out the kettle after using and clean it once a month. Descaling the kettle doesn’t stop the limescale from coming back. The most thorough way to prevent limescale is investing in a water softener.
