General view of Arabic coffee pot
The Arabic coffee pot, particularly as developed in the Middle East, played an active role in the preparation of coffee. To the Arabians, the dallah is synonymous with the ancient Bedouin traditions, where the ritual of coffee preparation, serving and drinking was a sign of hospitality. In this article, we are going to have a look at this unique coffee pot.
Structure
With its oval, bulbous shape, the body of the Arabic coffee pot is broader at the middle, tapering off towards the center and gently flaring out at the top again, where the hinged lid rests. The lid, wholly enclosed and hollow, is often constituted of two pieces, the lid proper and a finial screwed to its top.
The spout begins at the mid-base, like a small, crescent moon, and protrudes from the height of the lid's base or higher. A hinged flap sometimes covers the head of the protruding part. However, it is often open, so the user can see the coffee being funneled to the cups. The handle is opposite to the spout, usually in a curve shape. It begins at the base and ends at the rim forming the support for the lid's hinge.
The unique shape of the Arabic coffee pot makes it a highly recognizable object.
The materials to make the pot were copper, brass, tin, and silver. Although other metals, such as gold and, more recently, also plastic, have also been used.
