Famous types of Japanese teapot sets

October 2nd, 2023

Drinking tea has long been a form of art. With the aim of extracting the most flavor and aroma while creating an exquisite tasting experience, traditional methods involve brewing loose leaves in specialized teacups and teapots. Over decades, the Japanese have perfected the art of making tea and designed different types of teapots along the creative path. The following article intends to make a brief introduction of several Japanese teapot sets.

Japanese teapots, locally known as 'kyusu', come in three basic shapes. The teapot handles distinguish each style and add a new dimension to the art of brewing and pouring tea. The teapots are mostly made in the prefectures of Mie, Gifu, Aichi, and Niigata, where Iwachu and Tokoname are two of the most prolific teapot makers.

Famous teapots include the Banko teapot, Arita Yaki, Onko, Mumyoi Yaki, and Tokoname Yaki, all of which are named after the clay and regions where they are made. The teapots are also distinguished by the type of clay used in their manufacture. Banko teapots, for example, are typically made of purple clay, whereas Tokoname varieties are made of red clay.

Yokode kyusu (side-handle teapot)

A Yokode kyusu has a handle that protrudes directly from the side of the teapot. It has a narrow handle at the rounded edge that becomes more bulbous towards the free end. The spout is angled at 90 degrees from the handle. The teapot allows the tea drinker to pour with one hand by holding the handle and placing their thumb on the lid.

Ushirode kyusu (back-handle teapot)

This type of teapot is inspired by traditional Chinese teapots. It has a handle on the opposite side of the tea spout. These teapots have a lid that helps keep flavor and moisture in while steeping. This type of Japanese teapot is ideal for brewing Chinese and British teas.

Uwade kyusu (top-handle teapot)

The handle of an Uwade kyusu is located directly on top of the pot. It is usually made of a material that differs from the rest of the pot. If the pot is made of porcelain, the handle could be made of bamboo, plastic, or rattan. Since it is attached to the teapot with metal hooks, the handle stays cool.

The handle design also makes this teapot suitable for left-handed people. Like Yokode kyusu, this teapot is round and stout.
